Walkability Audit – July 14, 2018

⭐️⭐️⭐️🚸🚲⭐️⭐️⭐️We would like to extend to you an invitation to participate in a Walkability Audit along Bridge Avenue next Saturday, July 14, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. This audit will be conducted by Point Pleasant Borough Complete Streets and representatives from the Greater Mercer TMA. The group of participants will meet on the sidewalk in front of the Pt. Pleasant Boro Municipal Building, then navigate westward along Bridge Avenue to Sunrise Avenue (0.6 mi), then cross over Bridge Avenue and walk eastward to return to the starting point (total 1.2 mi).Walkability Audits are done to assess streets to identify barriers to walking and biking. These audits can help the Boro elementary schools gain a higher recognition status for future grant applications for infrastructure improvements to the areas as they are included in the Safe Routes to School zone surrounding the schools. This audit activity will further strengthen the public commitment by Pt. Boro to make recommended improvements for the safety of our residents of all ages and all abilities. Please bring a camera, or your phone camera, in order to document the barriers visually. So, get your sneakers on, roll a stroller or walk along, and join us! Hope to see you on Saturday the 14th. Thank you!#ppbcompletestreets

And a big HELLO to our newest members! Thank you for joining us. Here is a little description of what our mission is:

• The purpose of Point Pleasant Borough Complete Streets is to gather minds from the community to make constructive suggestions to our town officials who are in charge of guiding Complete Streets related projects. In the long run, the hope is to reduce the number of pedestrian and bicycle crashes in the Boro, by increasing the safety of our surroundings through thoughtful redesign of the existing roadways. At the same time, improved street design will yield a healthier lifestyle for Boro residents by encouraging walking and biking around town.

Sidewalk needed! School St.

Now here is a familiar walking route to school on a rainy day. Pt. Boro, we can do better!

👉🏼 Walking path along School St. is muddy and covered with puddles, so these students chose to walk in the street.

“Safe Routes to School programs aim to make it safer for students to walk and bike to school and encourage more walking and biking where safety is not a barrier. Transportation, public health and planning professionals, school communities, law enforcement officers, community groups and families all have roles to play using education, encouragement, engineering (changes to the physical environment) and enforcement to meet a local community’s needs.”

PPB Improvements to Existing Parks

Improving our parks is a great initiative as well! We have several beautiful parks our residents enjoy. The listed improvements to Heritage Park and Community Park will just make them more welcoming and pleasing to our residents and visitors.

Recommendation for Pt. Boro: Traffic Calming Around Our Schools

In light of recent crashes here in the Boro, clearly there is a need for more effective traffic calming measures in our school neighborhoods.  #ppbcompletestreets

“Properly designed and applied traffic calming devices encourage good motorist and pedestrian behavior in the school zone. Traffic calming measures such as high visibility crosswalks, street narrowing and signage can be in place all the time. Since school zones are locations frequented by children, making the area safe and accessible for children anytime of day is a sound investment for the community.”
